8 Types of Scaffolding and Their Uses

Scaffolding is a temporary structure that is constructed to support the original building structure. It is also a platform used by workmen to continue their construction works when it is not on a ground level or a finished floor.

8 Types of Scaffolding and Their Uses

There are different types of construction work, with each having its individual complexity.

Just like there are different types of construction works, Sydney scaffolding types also differ. The best part is, each type is suited for a specific type of construction work. As such, it is imperative that you choose the appropriate type of scaffolding for the construction work type you want to do. This will ensure that every construction worker has access to the best possible support and safety at their workplace. Click here to learn about the type of Sydney scaffolding.

Scaffolding in Sydney is made of either steel or timber. However, regardless of what they are made of, scaffoldings have to be strong, firm, and well-built. This is in order to enable them support all the workers and construction materials that will be resting on them.

Types of Scaffoldings

Below is a list of eight scaffolding types:

  • Single Scaffolding
  • Double Scaffolding
  • Steel Scaffolding
  • Suspended Scaffolding
  • Patented Scaffolding
  • Kwikstage Scaffolding
  • Cantilever Scaffolding
  • Trestle Scaffolding

How does each scaffolding type support the workforce on construction sites? Read on to find out.

Single Scaffolding

Also known as the brick layer’s scaffolding, single scaffolding is commonly used for brick masonry. It comprises standards, ledgers, and putlogs, among others, and it is constructed parallel to the wall at a distance of about 1.2m.

The distance between the standards of this scaffolding type lies between 2 and 2.5m. Ledgers are connected to the standards at a vertical distance of around 1.2 to 1.5m. Putlogs, on the other hand, are removed from the space in the wall to one end of the ledgers. They are usually placed at a distance of 1.2 to 1.5m.

Double Scaffolding

Also known as mason’s scaffolding or independent scaffolding, double scaffolding is commonly used for stone masonry. As opposed to brick walls, it is very difficult to make holes in stone walls to support putlogs. As such, two rows of scaffolding are usually constructed to make it much stronger. The first row of this scaffolding is installed at about a distance of 20 to 30cm from the wall. The second row is situated at about 1m away from the first row. Thereafter, putlogs are installed, and they are supported by the two scaffolding frames.

To provide more support to the working platform and make it much stronger, rakers and cross braces are usually used.

Steel Scaffolding

Steel scaffolding is a scaffolding type that is very easy to construct and dismantle. It is constructed using steel tubes that are connected to one another by means of steel couplers or fittings. Owing to the nature of its material, this scaffolding type has greater strength and durability than most other scaffolding types. It also has a much superior fire resistance.

Although steel scaffoldings are quite expensive in relation to other scaffolding types, they provide greater safety and support for construction workers. And this is why they are becoming more popular in construction today.

Suspended Scaffolding

Suspended scaffolding is your go-to scaffolding type when you want to carry out paintings, pointing, cleanings, repair works, etc. This scaffolding type is so named because it is usually suspended from roofs through the use of chains or wire ropes, etc. Depending on your preferred position, you can either lower or raise this working platform.

Patented Scaffolding

Similar to steel scaffoldings, patented scaffoldings are made up of steels. However, contrary to the former scaffolding type, the latter is comprised of special couplings and frames, etc.

As opposed to other scaffolding in Sydney, this scaffolding type is readymade and available in the market. In this type of scaffolding, the working platform is arranged on brackets that can be adjusted to the required level of the construction workers.

Kwikstage Scaffolding

The Kwikstage scaffolding is constructed from hard wearing galvanized steel. This scaffolding system is most ideal for all construction workers, regardless of the nature of the construction work.

Similar to the steel scaffolding system, assembling and erecting the Kwikstage scaffolding system is very easy and straightforward. And when you no longer have need for the system, dismantling it is also easy. The Kwikstage scaffolding system uses a strong interlocking system that makes it durable. It also has a patented modular system that can be constructed to any height you want it to.

Finally, irrespective of where you use regular scaffoldings, you can use the Kwikstage system as an alternative.

Cantilever Scaffolding

The cantilever scaffolding is a scaffolding system in which the standards are supported on a series of needles. When these needles are removed through holes in the wall, the scaffolding is called single frame type scaffolding. However, when the needles are inserted in the floors through the openings, the scaffolding is called independent or double frame type scaffolding.

It is recommended that you take extreme care when constructing the cantilever scaffolding. The following are some of the situations that requires the use of this scaffolding type:

  • When the area of the ground close to the wall is free from traffic
  • When the upper part of the wall is still under construction
  • When the ground is unable to adequately support the standards

Trestle Scaffolding

Trestle scaffolding is a scaffolding system in which the working platform is supported on movable ladders or tripods. This platform is used for construction works as high as 5m inside the room. Examples of these works include repairs, paintings, etc.

As already mentioned, the different scaffolding types are used for different types of construction work. As such, when you want to choose a scaffolding Sydney, ensure it is adequate for your needs. That is, ensure it provides the most appropriate amount of safety and support for the construction work you need it for. Also, if you are choosing a scaffolding company in Sydney, ensure they offer the best cost of scaffolding in Sydney.
